  • A COUPLE OF LIGHT SNOW THREATS
    Thursday, January 5, 2017

Winter cold has returned, and some snow is in the forecast as well. Light snow will break out late this evening and continue into Friday morning. Snow will be winding down during the morning commute. This will not be a big snow storm, but the timing will be a problem. Look out for slippery roads in the morning.

A more substantial storm will track well to our south on Saturday. The bulk of this storm will stay to our south; however, the northern fringe could brush our area with light snow Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening. We'll keep a close eye on it!

  • Minor Hiccups
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

Dry air is in place over southwestern Connecticut keeping a beautifully pleasant air mass over the area. An easterly wind will keep the pleasant air in place through Sunday, so it will be a definite beach day!

A front will approach southwestern Connecticut through the dry air on Monday, which will only bring passing clouds and a very small chance for a passing drizzle. This is due to the lack of available humidity that is often used to fuel stormy weather.

This hiccup will not affect many as the weather remains otherwise pleasant through Tuesday. The next hiccup comes through late on Wednesday as another front approaches the area. This front will bring showers through Thursday morning. It will also knock down temperatures for the ending of the week - feeling pleasantly seasonal with highs much cooler - near 77 degrees. Autumn is coming!...in just 25 days.

    Best Week of Summer?
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

Check out this 7-Day...you won't be disappointed. Humidity will be very low, and the air will be clear and pleasant. Enjoy!

  • Nice Beach Day

It'll be another great beach day across southwestern Connecticut on Friday. Here's your beach and boating forecast:

  • Much Rain
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

Heavy rain is on its way to southwestern Connecticut. This rainfall has potential to bring potential flooding to Southwestern Connecticut overnight into Friday afternoon.

Rain will steadily fall through the overnight hours and we will be watching close for the development of heavy rain bands. If these bands set up over southwestern Connecticut, we could potentially see even more rain.

Rainfall totals are currently forecast to be near 1.5" - 2" of rainfall, with potential to go higher. The large amount of rain can be overwhelming to the ground and thus create potential flood hazards for prone areas. These prone areas include (but are not limited to) low-lying zones, urban roadways with poor drainage, and small streams that collect runoff. Be careful if you're headed out - turn around, don't drown - it is best not to drive through a flooded roadway.

High temperatures will be surprisingly cooler with highs only reach the upper 70s.

Saturday looks better with partly cloudy skies and midday sunshine before more rain overnight into Sunday morning.
    Increasing Humidity
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

Light southwesterly winds will slowly push more humidity into southwestern Connecticut through the night. Low temperatures will be fairly warm near 70 degrees.

"Icky" & "Sticky" will describe Thursday's weather! It will also be pretty hot with highs near 88 degrees. Hazy sunshine will fill the air as high humidity will be with us through the day.

The humidity will take its toll by the afternoon where an isolated stray shower may pop up and pass through the area. This should could bring a brief downpour to southwestern Connecticut.

A front will then approach the area by late Thursday where heavy rain is like overnight into Friday morning. The heavy rain will continue through the first half of Friday bringing potential thunderstorms. These thunderstorms are not anticipated to be severe but could be strong with heavy rain and wind gusts of 30-40 mph.

  • Another Nice Beach Day

It'll be warm and more humid on Wednesday. Any thunderstorms are expected to stay to our west through the day. Don't forget the sunscreen!

    Pattern Changer
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

A pattern changer is headed into southwestern Connecticut starting on Monday night and it lasts through Wednesday. A cold front is approaching from the west and it will push some clouds into southwestern Connecticut through late Monday.

The front is anticipated to bring a stretch of unsettled weather. This does not mean that it will be raining the whole time, but it means that it will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and storms.

The front will increase clouds just before sunset on Monday. Scattered drizzle will be in the area but chances for heavy rain are low through the final few hours of Monday.

Chances for rain increase overnight as the front picks up moisture in the area. This can spark showers through the Tuesday morning commute and a potential thunderstorm.

There will be mostly cloudy skies through Tuesday with chances for showers at any time during the day. The chances for the heaviest showers are on Tuesday morning (seen above) and again on Tuesday evening (near sunset). Some showers may linger into Wednesday morning before conditions improve through Wednesday afternoon.

So don't forget the umbrella for Tuesday and for Wednesday morning!
  • High Pressure In Control
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

We don't typically talk about "pressure" but this weekend's weather pattern is strongly attributed to a weather feature known as "High Pressure"

High pressure is typically noted on a weather map by a large H over the area seeing that weather pattern. In fact, that weather pattern brings beautiful weather to southwestern Connecticut.

The fair weather will take its time leaving the area, hence why we will see a prolonged period of sunny and quiet weather.

Sunday and Monday will both be excellent beach and boating days!

But even sunny and fair weather has to come to an end. Another weather pattern approaches from the west for Tuesday and some thundershowers are possible. So get out there and enjoy while you can!

  • First Full Day Of Summer
    Meteorologist Garett Argianas

The first full day of summer is looking pretty nice across southwestern Connecticut. A round of rain is possible around sunrise (which is about 5:20 AM). Any wet weather will quickly exit and things will settle down for the rest of the day.

  • Enhanced Fire Weather Risk
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

Dry air is being pushed into southwestern Connecticut today as a gusty northwesterly wind pushes yesterday's unsettled weather away.

Low relative humidity levels, the strong sunshine/warmth, and gusty winds of 30mph+ create the right conditions for fires to easily spread if left unattended or uncontrolled. Please be careful with open flames and extinguish cigarettes fully!

The risk for fires to spread is at an enhanced level for Sunday evening!

The fire risk does decrease slightly into Monday as the wind will not be as strong. Monday's wind will gust at 15-25 mph.

The wind will calm by the evening with a clear sky lasting into Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • Drying Out
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

A cold front that is approaching the area has sparked up some thunderstorms and downpours west of southwestern Connecticut. These storms are drying out as the front moves closer to the area where only a sprinkle can be expected for the remainder of the night.

Areas of patchy fog will develop along the Connecticut shoreline through the overnight hours before clearing up near sunrise.

Tuesday will feature a dry weather pattern with wind from the northwest and plenty of sunshine. High temperatures will be in the 80s.

  • Tropical Storm Bonnie
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

As of 5PM today, a tropical depression just off the coast of South Carolina has slightly strengthened into a Tropical Storm.

Tropical Storm Bonnie will be "hanging out" off the coast of the Carolinas through Memorial Day. The rain associated with the Tropical Storm is actually displaced and a lot of it will be pulled up to the northeast with the jet stream. On Monday, the rain will arrive to southwestern Connecticut while the storm itself stays to the south.

There will be periods of heavy rain likely through Memorial Day. It may not be the best day for outdoor plans.

In fact, it will be best to do outdoor activites for Sunday. The weather will be beautiful and mostly sunny with more clouds towards the evening.

It is very important to wear sunscreen when spending time outdoors since the UV Index will be a 9 - VERY HIGH for Sunday. SPF 45+ is suggested and always remember to reapply your sunscreen after swimming.
  • Unsettled Sunday
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

Two storms will bring some minor impacts to southwestern Connecticut as we head through the next few days.

One storm will stay to the south, and the other will stay to the west and eventually move south of our area.

As the storm currently located east of New Jersey and south of Long Island moves off to the North Atlantic, we will see some showers move through this evening followed by a cloudy sky overnight. The overnight hours should remain mostly dry and Sunday morning will open up cloudy with a low of 51 degrees.

In fact, Sunday won't just be cloudy, but it will be a mixed bag of sun, clouds, and rain!

Through the morning, the clouds will part slightly to show some peeks of sunshine. There will be variable amount of sunshine through the partly sunny afternoon. Some pop-up showers spark to the north associated with unsettled air influenced by the storm currently over Ohio and Pennsylvania. This storm moves south of the area through Sunday. The pop-up showers move with the storm as it pushes offshore and some of the showers may move through southwestern Connecticut for Sunday evening.

The storm pushes offshore well to the south on Sunday night into Monday and the clouds will decrease over southwestern Connecticut for the first half of Monday. By Monday evening, the storm pushes to the North Atlantic and can return some thick clouds and light rain showers to southwestern Connecticut. The chance for showers are small for Monday night into Tuesday morning, but the storm finally pushes away from the area by Tuesday evening.

The weather pattern then turns warm for the ending of the next week where temperatures can reach 80 degrees for the first time this season!

  • Breaking Low Temperature Records
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

The next few days will be fairly cold for May. The jet stream sunk into southwestern Connceticut which is ushering in a change of the weather pattern that welcomes cool and dry Canadian air.

The wind has been kicking up and it will stay blustery through Monday with peak wind speeds as high as 30mph at times.

Overall, this cooler air mass has been sending unseasonably cold air into the northeast and midwest.

This will dive down overnight low temperatures to near freezing! This temperature will surely break low temeprature records for May 16th! The previous record was 41 degrees set in 1983. Lows tonight should be near 39 degrees.

This cooler air is expected to stay with us for the next few days. We are anticipating the arrival of unsettled weather on Tuesday into Wednesday that will push away the cooler air and return the seasonal warmth for the end of the week.

    RAIN RETURNS
    Meteorologist Garett Argianas

After a number of gorgeous days, wet weather returns to our area on Friday.

It'll be mostly cloudy in the morning. A few spotty showers or sprinkles are possible through lunchtime.

The most likely time for rain is Friday afternoon through early Friday evening. Be sure to have your umbrella!

    PATCHY FROST TONIGHT
    Meteorologist Garett Argianas

After another stellar spring day, temperatures will drop into the 30s and lower 40s tonight.

Here's a look at HyperLocal lows for tonight:

A frost advisory is in effect for areas north of the Merritt. Protect your plants by bringing them inside or covering them with an old bed sheet.

    Mild Days & Mild Nights
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

This wonderful weather pattern continues into Monday as overnight temperatures will be in the mid-40s.

It will warm up into the 70s on Monday with more sunshine. This will be the warmest day of the week with highs near 76 north of the Merritt and 72 south of the Merritt. The weather pattern that has been blocking the wet weather finally starts changing on Monday night as clouds dip into the area from the north. Monday night’s low will be near 50 degrees. This cold front is actually going to me mostly dry with scattered drizzle and passing clouds for Tuesday morning.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be a touch cooler with highs near seasonal. Tuesday’s skies will clear in the afternoon with a high of 62. Wednesday will feature more sunshine and thin clouds with a high of 58. Temperatures rise back into the upper 60s again with a southwesterly wind for Thursday.

Overnight lows remain mild and in the lower to mid 40s for the remainder of the week.

Stormy weather then finally arrives from the west-southwest bringing scattered showers Friday and Saturday.

    Wonderful Weekend
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

Wow! What a weekend ahead! It's been a rough start to April as winter didn't want to let go. Each weekend this month felt more like February and early March. Now, it's going to feel very May-like!

So let's get right to it!

An area of "High Pressure" is located over the northeast. This type of weather pattern fosters sunshine, clear skies, and dry weather. It's great!

The picture above looks bare and empty except for the clouds to the north and east. They'll stay there. Wind patterns in a high pressure typically "push" stormy weather away.

Even going into Saturday, you can see just that in the futurecast graphic below with the area of sunny "high pressure" pushing all the cloud and shower activity around the eastern United States!

Headed through the next 7-days,  it continues to look promising, but don't let the afternoon warmth fool you for the nighttime. It'll be pretty chilly and cooler outside overnight...but that's normal for this time of year!

Tuesday features a little hiccup - but nothing that we can't handle. It's just a cold front that drops from the north. It may bring some light sprinkles into Tuesday morning. It will be more of a cloudy passing than a rainy passing.

So...needless to say, let's enjoy the next four days!

    COLD NIGHTS, NICE DAYS
    Meteorologist Garett Argianas
    Wednesday, April 13, 2016

We are entering a stretch of great spring weather!

Temperatures tonight will be close to the freezing mark. If you have any plants that are sensitive, protect them from the cold tonight.
    Low Temperatures

    Freeze Warning

It will turn warmer early next week. Temperatures will approach 70 (away from the water) on Sunday and Monday.

    April Showers
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

So there's an unsettled start to the upcoming workweek...

Although Monday will be mostly cloudy and rainy - it will not be a washout as some scattered showers will be lingering in and out of southwestern Connecticut through the early morning into the afternoon!

As we head into the afternoon and early evening, the sky may even part to show some sunshine for sunset. But this is only a brief break as a cold front approaches from the west.

Areas of patchy fog can develop late on Monday night into Tuesday before the front passes by. This is because the air will be very humid from the previous day's southerly winds.

Then just like that, the cold front sweeps through during Tuesday morning's commute. It'll be very important to have the umbrellas handy for Tuesday as well since we are expected to see more rain then.

The sky will clear when all this rain wraps up on Tuesday afternoon. We can be left with just about a half of an inch of rain across southwestern Connecticut.

Then for the midweek, we can expect sunshine and spring-like temperatures...finally! Highs for the remainder of the week will rise to the upper 50s for the afternoon highs.

    C'mon Spring!
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

A storm to the south remains to the south as some colder air is filtered into southwestern Connecticut tonight.
This storm is moving offshore with the jet stream as it carries colder air to southwestern Connecticut. We will see a Freeze Warning remain in effect until 10AM on Sunday morning.
The cold air will be in place through Sunday with a breeze from the northwest in the morning. This breeze turns southwesterly in the afternoon and evening and thus warms temperatures for Monday.
The jet stream rises north for Monday and a line of showers approach from the west as unsettled weather arrives. This weather continues into Tuesday then finally clears out for the remainder of the week ahead.

Oh...and temperatures rise back to seasonal to the upper 50s and even hitting 60 for next weekend!

    WIND & APRIL SNOW
    Meteorologist Garett Argianas

The chance of snow will have everyone talking this weekend, however, the gusty wind will also be a big player with potentially a greater impact on us.

A cold front will come through Saturday night, bringing winter-like cold and plenty of wind. Wind gusts may reach over 50 mph Saturday night and Sunday morning. Be "weather aware" for the potential for damage and power outages.

    High Wind Watch

On top of that, a burst of snow is likely late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Don't be surprised if the ground is covered when you wake up Sunday morning!

    Sunday AM Snow

    Spring Swing!
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

The weather will turn soggy for much of Friday as we can expect rounds of showers to roll through southwestern Connecticut. These showers are anticipated to arrive late tonight just after midnight in the form of light drizzle and showers.
Overnight lows remain mild due to the southerly winds that are injecting mild and humid air to southwestern Connecticut.

Moving through the day on Friday, the umbrellas are a must. We can expect showers to linger in the area from the morning rush continuing into the early afternoon. There may be a brief break of plain drizzle in the late morning and early afternoon before the big part of the show begins.
    Umbrellas Up!

The cold front pushes through in the late afternoon and early evening. From here, we can expect to see a line of strong downpours and rain move through southwestern Connecticut. Some of these downpours might even bring lightning and thunder as they move through. The quick and heavy burst of rain can create some areas of localized urban puddling that could make the roadways very slippery and unpredictable. Please use caution while driving after 3PM through 6PM Friday evening.
    Boom!

Conditions improve going into Saturday. The tail of this cold front swings back through early on Saturday morning providing brief showers that end to a mostly cloudy sky for Saturday.

The wind for Saturday night into Sunday will be dangerous and could be destructive. It is important to make preparations now for strong winds for the weekend as these gusts can exceed 40 mph.
On and off showers will pass through as well!

Temperatures start tumbling into the upper 40s for the next week. Don't worry it's not uncommon to see with a swing in spring!

    Sunday Planner

    Blue Sky! Fairfield Time Lapse

    First Week of Spring
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for New Haven county for wintry conditions expected during the overnight hours.

A coastal storm will intensify over the mid-Atlantic coast through Sunday evening and eventually move northeast into the North Atlantic grazing the northern edge of the storm through southwestern Connecticut. As clouds build through Sunday evening, a few rounds of spotty drizzle and flurries are likes as a disturbance to the west moves north.

Storms traditionally follower the jet stream noted by the blue arrows. The jet stream will "transfer" storm energy into the mid-Atlantic which amplifies the coastal storm. The jet stream then moves it northeast.

The coastal storm will start sending very light snow showers our way after 8PM and eventually fills the area near midnight into a steady wet-snow. Temperatures overnight will reach near or just below freezing so the snow will be wet, heavy, and melty. The snowfall will stick more to vegetated surfaces than roads but this does not rule out slick and slushy travel conditions overnight into Monday morning’s commute.
Overnight low temperatures going into Monday morning.

The snowfall may have a burst overnight before quickly tapering off to lighter snow just before sunrise near 6AM. Conditions begin to rapidly increase through Monday where we can expect more sun than clouds by the mid-afternoon.
Total snowfall amounts will range between 1 - 4". Greenwich will see closer to 1" and New Haven will see closer to 4". The snow will be wet, melty, slushy, and heavy and will stick better to vegetated surfaces. The snow will also make for messy roadways and sidewalks for the Monday morning commute.

We may even see a very pretty orange sunset Monday evening. Monday’s high will be in the mid-40s.

A sunny sky continues into Tuesday with highs a touch warmer in the upper-40s. A chance for light rain moves through on Wednesday as a warm front pushes warmer air to southwestern Connecticut to finish the week with temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s through Friday.

    Wintry Weather For Spring!

As we head into Sunday the weather pattern favors minor impacts of a coastal storm. This storm is taking an "out-to-sea" track...but not entirely. The western and northern edges of the storm will pass through southwestern Connecticut.

As we head into Sunday morning, we are likely to wake up with a mostly cloudy sky. You will also probably see some breaks of sunshine. However, these sunny spots will give away to an overcast quickly as the storm's northern edge forces some more clouds to the area.

The temperatures for the afternoon should hike to the upper 30s, nearing 40 degrees for a high. Some forecast guidance suggests that temperatures can exceed 40 degrees. This will depend on the amount of sunshine we see in the morning.

Flurries and even light drizzle is possible after noon on Sunday and when the sun goes down, temperatures start falling into the lower 30s. This will encourage wet-snow to form and it will have difficulty accumulating on roadways at first. Impacts are anticipated to be minor.

The snow continues overnight as steady light snow.

The storm is expected to lighten significantly over southwestern Connecticut right after sunrise. Some lingering snow flurries continue into the late morning and even into the early afternoon but conditions slowly improve through Monday.

Snowfall totals are expected to reach 1-2" in our western areas and 2 - 3" in our eastern areas.

    EARLY SPRING WINTER STORM
    Thursday, March 17, 2016

Confidence is growing that a Nor'easter will impact the east coast Sunday and Monday.

It may seem impossible given the warm weather this week, but things will cool down. A cold front will knock temperatures down Friday night into Saturday. Saturday will be bright and much cooler. Temperatures will drop below freezing Saturday night, setting us up for wintry weather on the first day of spring on Sunday.

The current forecast calls for a rain and snow mix to break out Sunday afternoon. By later in the day and at night, this will change to all snow. Wet snow, possibly mixed with sleet or rain, is likely Sunday night into Monday morning.

Given that the storm threat is still a few days away, it is too early to give specifics on snow totals. There is a large range of possible outcomes, so don't buy into what people are sharing on Facebook.

At this point, plan for a "plowable" snow Sunday afternoon into Monday morning. As the storm gets closer, we'll have more details on timing and amounts. Stay with News 12 Connecticut for the latest!

    SPRING WINTER STORM THREAT

Cool air will return this weekend. This will set the stage for a potential winter storm as we kick off spring. This is still several days away, so the range of possible outcomes remains large: anything from a snowstorm to a complete miss. We'll keep tracking the storm threat over the next several days. As of right now, there is potential for snow on Monday morning.

This particular computer model shows the snow threat for Sunday night and early Monday morning:

    Rainy Monday
    Meteorologist Mike Rizzo @meteor_mike

A warm front will be approaching southwestern Connecticut for Monday and it will be raining all day. The good news is that it won't be too cold - actually highs for Monday will only reach a few degrees below seasonal across southwestern Connecticut.

The drizzle should start late tonight after 10PM in southwestern Connecticut and continue overnight. By the early morning the air should be saturated enough to withstand steady light rain through the early afternoon.

    1 of 2

It is also expected to be breezy through the day with a sustained breeze near 15 - 20 mph. An occasional gust may reach up to 35 mph! Since the wind will be coming from the east, this could increase the chances for very minor coastal flooding along prone shoreline areas.

The rain will be heaviest in the evening and eventually clear going into Tuesday morning. Tuesday morning opens up with fog and patchy drizzle. The fog could be dense in some places so it is important to exercise caution while on the roads. The fog will lift in the late morning and we may be graced with a glance of sunshine in the afternoon.

Temperatures for Tuesday hike to the mid-50s and then we return to a high of 60 for Wednesday right before a cold front moves through sometime Wednesday night into Thursday.
    "Cooler Along The Shore"
    Meteorologist Garett Argianas
    Tuesday, March 8, 2016

The phrase "cooler along the shore" is a sure sign of the spring season. The water temperature of Long Island Sound is around 40°. While temperatures away from the beaches can warm up nicely this time of year, a wind off that cold water means it won't be as mild at the shore.
